To celebrate mother’s day, we spoke to the award-winning beauty brand founder about her brand mission, the best advice she’s received, and the challenges she’s encountered.

Q: What is your brand mission and why are you passionate about it?
A: At KORA Organics, we uplift and nurture people every day through powerful, certified organic products. Our mission is to inspire people to be the healthiest versions of themselves inside and out. When I was 16, my mother was diagnosed with cancer in her spleen and this encouraged us as a family to look more into our health and research ALL the products we were using in our household, from skincare to haircare to cleaning products, etc. We were shocked to see how carcinogenic and toxic certain ingredients can be that were readily available on the market and deemed safe. Even products that claimed to be natural really weren’t!
I was also using so many different products day-to-day for work as a model, so I got to try pretty much everything out there and learnt so much about what textures work to really make your skin GLOW underneath makeup! I thought to myself, “How amazing would it be to create a range of healthy, yet super effective products?” Then a friend of mine introduced me to an incredible organic chemist. I set out to create certified organic skincare because I wanted to use not just healthy products, but really powerful, pure and results-driven skincare. This is how KORA Organics was born.
Q: What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received that other female entrepreneurs would benefit from?
A: Invest in your passion. In 2015, my husband encouraged me to take the leap of faith and invest in my own company. It was a little daunting to take that big step. And when I said this to my husband — that I would be putting all my eggs in one basket, that it’s a little scary, it’s a big investment, it’s overwhelming—he said, “Well, I just don’t understand why you haven’t, why has it taken this long?” Shortly after, I began talking with Sephora. And now, five years later, KORA Organics is sold in over 30 countries. I would also tell other female entrepreneurs to follow their intuition and passion.
Q: What is a challenge that you’ve experienced and how did you overcome it?
A: One challenge has been that most people don’t realize the difference between clean and certified organic products. It’s great that there is a desire for more “clean” products. But it’s frustrating that we’re so much more than “clean”, we’re Certified-Organic. Cambridge did a study saying that there are up to 60% more antioxidants in a certified organic ingredient than a non-certified organic ingredient. So not only do we not use unnecessary chemicals in our products, but we’re taking it so much further by using certified organic ingredients, which have more antioxidants and produce more powerful results. I wanted that outside certification for KORA Organics, so people didn’t have to take my word for it. That’s the assurance that I wanted because that way, they’re getting what they need; they’re getting healthy skincare that can help them transform their skin. I feel really proud of where we’re at and that we were able to pave the way for so many people that are interested in clean beauty.
