What Fruits Can Your Dog Eat

There’s a reason why we call them our canine companions: we just love sharing as much of our lives with them as possible.

Whether it’s hitting the town a stroll in some matching luxury apparel, a shared appreciation for naps, or finding ways to bring them up in every conversation and dazzling our friends with our adorable canine captures, there’s so much of our lives we adore sharing with our accomplices.

But what about sharing a favourite fruity snack together? Whether it’s a refreshing fruit salad, or a nutritious smoothie boost, how can you know which fruits you can safely share with your dog?

On the whole, giving certain fruits to your pups can be great for boosting hydration, as well as giving them the vitamins and antioxidants they need to stay fit and healthy. Incorporating fruit into your dog's diet can be a super beneficial way to keep their nutritions fresh and balanced, but be sure to not replace entire components of their diets with fruit or expect them to live off berries alone!

Which fruits are safe for my dog to eat?

Cranberries: a tart but tasty treat

Cranberries are a super versatile snack for your pooch, whether they’re raw, dried or cooked! But we’d recommend giving the cranberry sauce a miss, that’s just far too much sugar for a delicate puppy tum. Super high in antioxidants, vitamins C, E and B, cranberries make a perfect on-the-go snack for your dog.

Bananas: fancy splitting this one?

This super portable post-workout snack is also a fantastic way for your dog to refuel! Notoriously high in potassium, fibre and vitamin C, bananas are great for helping with your pup’s digestion. Just make sure not to give them too much, as the sugar and fibre content can cause tummy upsets!

Watermelon sugar, high!

As long as you don’t feed them the rind, watermelon makes a great fruity treat for your pup. Not only does watermelon have a uber high water content, making it super hydrating, it’s also got loads of great vitamins and antioxidants which protect against cell damage, and helps convert the nutrients in their diet into energy. The same goes for cantaloupes, as long as you steer clear of the hard rind, a nice slice of melon is great for enhancing vision and the immune system.

Strawberry fields forever

Much like watermelon, strawberries have a very high water content, making them a great, refreshing snack for those particularly hot days. As long as you remove the stalks, strawberries are a great boost to the canine immune system, as well as bringing a high level of antioxidants.

You know what they say about an apple a day…

The same can apply for dogs too! Apples are rich in vitamins A and C, and have a high fibre content, all useful nutrients that can help avoid any unwanted vet trips. They’re also great for keeping teeth clean and breath-fresh, making morning snuggles in bed all the more enjoyable for you. Just remember to remove the core and the seeds of any apple snacks, as these are toxic and can cause obstructions in their stomachs.

Pups just love papaya

Adding papaya to your breakfast, or even a refreshing salad? Save some for your furry friend! Papayas are packed full of all the naturally nutritious goodies, like fibre, calcium, potassium, and an impressive roll call of vitamins too (think A, C, E, K). The perfect way to share some fruity, tropical vibes together without breaking out the summer cocktails.

Raspberry Beret

We reckon there’s a reason why Prince loved these ruby red berries so much, and not just because it makes a great headwear colour. Raspberries are great for your dogs, and are thought to help prevent both circulatory diseases and cancer. They’re also the perfect size for hiding any pills or medication your dog might be taking! A nutritious and rewarding way of sneaking pesky pills past that ever so sensitive palate of theirs…

So now we’ve established what’s a safe fruity treat for your four legged friend, why not mix up how you add these nutritious snacks into their diet?

Here's a creative way to share a sweet fruity treat with our dogs...

Puppy popsicles!

Simply mix your fruit of choice with some water and yoghurt, and freeze into either ice cubes or an ice lolly mould. Then you’ve got a great nutritious snack for those especially hot days!

Delicious smoothies...

Next time you’re whipping up a smoothie bowl, save some for your fur friend! As long as you stick to the above, safe fruits, and steer clear of any ingredients that are toxic to dogs, you’ll both be living your best #fruity life on insta in no time!

Which fruits are NOT safe for your dog to eat?

As well as knowing which fruits are perfectly safe and nutritious for your dog to enjoy, it’s equally important to know which fruits your pup needs to avoid.

These include:

Any citrus fruits (that includes lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits)
Avocados
Grapes or raisins
Cherries
Tomatoes
Plums
Rhubarb

Whether they contain large pips and stones that could get lodged in your dog's stomach, or have a level of acidity that’s just too high for them to digest safely, make sure you stay away from the above fruits to keep your dog happy and healthy.
